BRIEF BIOGRAPHY

Born in Leningrad in 1981, Dr. Igor Kotin studied in Leningrad, St. Petersburg, and Oxford. After serving in the Soviet Army from 1987 to 1989, he resumed his study at the Leningrad (St. Petersburg) State University, where he graduated with a Specialist diploma in 1993. In 1994, he entered the D.Phil program at the University of Oxford. From 1990 till now, he has worked at Peter the Great Museum of Anthropology and Ethnography of the Russian Academy of Sciences. From 2019 until now, he has been the head of the Department of South and Southwest Asia at the MAE RAS (the Kunstkamera).

EDUCATION:

  • 1993 Specialist diploma in History from Leningrad (St. Petersburg) State University. 
  • 1994-1996 D. Phill. program at Wolfson college, the University of Oxford 
  • 1999 Candidate of Sciences (History) degree. Dissertation topic: “South Asian Muslims in Great Britain.”  
  • 2001 D.Phil degree from the Oxford University
  • 2010 Dr. of Sciences (History); Doctoral thesis: “Formation of the South-Asian diaspora.” 

MAIN TOPIC OF RESEARCH:

South Asian ethnography, South Asian religions, South Asian diaspora, and history of South Asian collections at the MAE RAS (the Kunstkamera).

  • 2007-2008: Gonda Foundation Award by the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences (KNAW)
