Visit of the Ambassador of the Kingdom of Thailand to the Kunstkamera
On June 8, the Kunstkamera was visited by Mr. Sasiwat Wongsinsawat - Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Kingdom of Thailand to Russia. He met with the director of Peter the Great Museum of Anthropology and Ethnography of the Russian Academy of Sciences Andrei V. Golovnev. They discussed the prospects for cooperation and the possibilities of implementing joint exposition, restoration and publishing projects. Also, Andrei Golovnev, through the Ambassador, invited Thai ethnographers and anthropologists to participate in the Congress of the International Union of Anthropological and Ethnological Sciences (IUAES) that will be held in St. Petersburg in a year - at the end of May 2022.
With particular interest, Mr. Wongsinsawat examined items from the Thai collections of the MAE RAS. Museum items, namely gifts from the King of Siam Rama V of Siam to the Grand Duke Nikolas, were prepared for display in the reading room of the library at the MAE RAS. These are photographs of the king and queen of Siam, as well as traditional weapons in wooden cases with the emblems of the Kingdom of Siam. Alexander Yu. Sinitsyn, Senior Researcher of the Department of East and Southeast Asia, told the Ambassador about the peculiarities of Thai weapons in the collections of the MAE RAS.
The representatives of the Embassy of the Kingdom of Thailand were also delighted to see the two volumes of the original gift edition of the book by Esper E. Ukhtomsky “The Journey of the Heir Tsarevich to the East” displayed in the library. The guests were also given a short tour of the permanent exhibition of the Museum and told about the Thai items on display.
