Regular meeting of the standing seminar "Christianity in the regions of the world"
April 28, 3 p.m., in the reading room of the Library of the MAE RAS a regular meeting of the standing seminar of the MAE RAS "Christianity in the regions of the world" will be held. Nikolai Steblin-Kamensky, junior researcher at the African department of the MAE RAS, will make a report on the topic “The Lyre of King David (begena) – the role of the musical instrument in the culture of Christian Ethiopia”.
Begena has a special status in Ethiopia. Traditionally, royalty and the aristocracy were able to use this instrument. Begenas accompanied both church hymns and verses about life wisdom, reminding listeners of the frailty of everything earthly. Modernization, the development of the modern music industry, the revolution of 1974 presented significant challenges to which begena had to adapt. The workshop will present the history of the musical instrument in Ethiopia, its design features and examples of chants.
